Living with Less in 2012

§ December 30th, 2011 § Filed under Home Organization, Living with less § Tagged , § 4 Comments

Christmas is over. The week after Christmas always makes me a little sad. After all the hustle and bustle, I am not sure what to do with my time. The last thing I want to do is clean.  But it must be done. Last year, I blogged about organization and living with less from time to time. As always, that motivation lasted for a little while, then *POOF* it disappeared. So, today, I am hear to say my motto for next year is – Living With Less in 2012. This is not a New Year’s Resolution.  I do not declare resolutions. It is simply a motto that I plan to live by ;) Raise your hand if you want to join with me and declare this as your motto too! Maybe I will start here.

My guest room junk closet.

I see you shaking your head ;)

From time to time, my blog posts will feature cleaning out and living with less. If we have less in our homes, then there will be less to clean and organize :)

Rules:

Items will be purchased only if needed or will be used within a reasonable amount of time (example: a good sale on hand soap).

Items purchased will have a place to live (the junk closet does not count as a place to live).

If new items are purchased, then something must be donated (if worthy) it it’s place (buy a new handbag, a handbag must go).

If I purchase a thrift store “project”, I have exactly 6 weeks to complete my wonderful project idea ;) – I will not store in the garage.

Just because it is 90% off doesn’t mean it comes home to live.

I may add more rules later, but right now I can’t think of anymore :) My mind is tired.

Living with less

§ November 17th, 2011 § Filed under donation, Home Organization, Operation Declutter, organization § Tagged , , , § 2 Comments

My goal this year was to organize, donate, organize, live with less, donate some more.  I am proud to say that I continue to work on that goal.   Except…..my 3 month rule has spilled over to 6 months. School has kicked my butt this semester!  Nonetheless, I continue to find things to donate.  Things.  Why do we need so many things? I thought I would share the latest donation collection.

donation

Items are being added each day. My plan is to take the donations to a local charity/thrift store.  Local stores receive less donations than bigger named stores.  Not trying to persuade you, just giving my opinion. All donations, regardless of the organization, help someone in need.  The balls and a few other items will be donated to a local toy drive. I will share my final donation collection soon. From this point on, I will not buy an item unless I have a place to use it.  It will not, I repeat, will not be put in my storage closet.

Have a great weekend!

Find a few things to donate :)

Socks.

§ July 19th, 2011 § Filed under Home Organization § Tagged § 5 Comments

Socks. Who invented socks?  I’m not sure, but {sarcastically} thanks!  Thank you for giving me the extra job of washing, drying, and searching for socks 18 hours per week.

I know socks are useful. They keep our feet warm.  Keep funky odors out of our shoes.

Even so, sometimes I feel just like Elaine from Seinfeld.  Do you remember this episode?

Of course, I do not work for Mr. Pitt.  I also do not actually put socks on my husband or boys.  But I can relate to Elaine.  Many times I felt like curling into a ball and giving up on socks.  Well, maybe that is a bit exaggerated…but not by much.  Look at this pile of socks.

Over the weekend, the boys and I gathered socks throughout the house.  Socks were under the sofa, stuffed into cushions, hiding under beds, and other places where socks should not live.  I didn’t count, but I estimate 100 socks to be in that pile.

So, I came up with a plan.

The plan above all other plans.

Best plan of all.

I hope Smile.

The guys get new socks. Different brands, different colors.

12 pairs each = $$$.  Socks are a bit pricey.

I know, it’s not rocket science.  I am sure some of you reading this wonder WHY it took me so long to find this solution.  Or maybe you have a similar system for your socks.

I hope that when these socks are in a pile, it will be much easier to find a matching pair.  Fingers crossed.

If it doesn’t work, then socks may be the end of me.

Just kidding.

Maybe?

Garage Update

On Monday, I shared pictures of our disorganized garage.  I wanted to share our progress with you.  Two shelves are complete!

Garage Organization

Several projects are going on in my home right now.  If you read my blog from time to time, you know how I jump from one thing to the next.  Seriously, I have never been able to sit still for very long – it is just in my nature. So, along with the front entrance, the boys’ bedroom, and the guest bedroom, we have now started organizing the garage.  We needed to to this project when we first moved in, but it always got pushed to the bottom of the to do list.

So junky!  Very stressful just going in there.  Jump over this, trip over that!

So embarrassing.

A shame really.

I had one little space to work on furniture.  Difficult to get to the lawnmower to cut grass.

And, yes, the tumbleweed is still there too.  I have an idea for that…saw it in a PB catalog once.

We are making progress.

We loaded the back of the truck with items for donation and junk for the dump.  The back seat was full too.  After the big drop off, we made a trip (or 3) to Home Depot for supplies to build a few shelves!  The best husband ever – which happens to be my husband – has completed one shelf.  Which happened to be built in 100+ degree heat.  It was like a sauna in there!  But he loves me… Only 2 more shelves to go!  I can’t wait to show everyone my organized garage!! I am so super excited.

Hope your Monday has been tolerable Smile.
